“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” Alice Walker
I was thinking about this quote in light of the last 21 months of global disruption.
Consider life. And consider how government treats us.
Is someone else calling the shots in our life and dismissing us as powerless? If so, there’s risk of conforming to the oppressive way someone else wants us to live… and we start acting like we’ve given up power. Perhaps that’s the idea. The danger… it could be perceived that we don’t have any.
Don’t be fooled.
We do have power. We have the power to lead, to decide, to reason, to rationalize, to discern, to push back, to seek truth, to make decisions in life. Of course this is not in a vacuum; we live in community with God, with each other, and with the world around us. But our autonomy needs a voice… your voice and mine. A healthy community listens to all voices no matter how small.
And I have a hunch there are some voices out there that think they don’t have any power.
Your pain, your suffering, your challenge during these times matter. Speak up. You have more power than you realize.
