Climate Series No. 6 – Storms

So often as of late we hear that when bad storms, floods, tornados, or any other natural disasters occur, it is a result of climate change. Many have bought into this ideology and immediately blame human occupation on earth as a direct cause of climate change. Alarmists beckon great change is needed or the earth and its inhabitants are doomed.

Says who?

A bunch of 21st century naturalistic paradigm scientists who think they have say over what is happening in the world we live in?

First off, it’s a deflection… and a bunch of fear mongering to coerce people into guilt so they will gladly pay their way towards unreachable solutions. It deflects from the truth that God is the Creator and Sustainer of this earth, and of our whole cosmos. He is fully in control and for those who come to know Him, there is no being afraid of how He governs the climate.

But if we blame human occupation of the earth as a cause of storms and natural disasters, it becomes a convenient way to side-step what God is doing and oppress those who live on earth (including increasing taxes to help control all of earth’s climate problems of course) as if man can somehow usurp God’s position of power and control over the climate.

Let’s be clear on two things about climate:

First, humans cannot and will never be in control of the climate. Sure we can impact the climate positively and negatively, and we can affect pockets of the climate (micro-climates). But we will never gain control over weather patterns and storms as they unfold around the earth.

Second, God is very much in control of everything related to the climate, and weather patterns unfold according to His will. He sends storms for specific purposes, for one of these three actually: for correction, for His land, for love. Check out these ancient and preserved writings from Job 37:5-13:

5 God thunders wondrously with his voice;
he does great things that we cannot comprehend.
6 For to the snow he says, ‘Fall on the earth,’
likewise to the downpour, his mighty downpour.
7 He seals up the hand of every man,
that all men whom he made may know it.
8 Then the beasts go into their lairs,
and remain in their dens.
9 From its chamber comes the whirlwind,
and cold from the scattering winds.
10 By the breath of God ice is given,
and the broad waters are frozen fast.
11 He loads the thick cloud with moisture;
the clouds scatter his lightning.
12 They turn around and around by his guidance,
to accomplish all that he commands them
on the face of the habitable world.
13 Whether for correction or for his land or for love, he causes it to happen.

Storms (which include clouds) accomplish all that God commands them!

So when we experience major storms or natural disasters, we must stop mucking about thinking we are the cause and the solution to climate woes.

No, we must look up and ask God,

“Are you sending this upon us for CORRECTION, for YOUR LAND, or for YOUR LOVE?”

And if we are a stubborn people needing CORRECTING, do show us the way. Have we abused YOUR LAND? Have we forgotten YOUR LOVE?
