What Side of “Millions of Years” Are You On?

Many of us have heard the theory that the earth is millions and millions, even billions of years old. And so also the universe. A quick Google search reveals the earth is said to be about 4.543 billion years old.

Many believe in this theory. It’s called the theory of evolution. This theory claims that all of life evolved from some sort of initial chemical reaction and then eventually a single life cell somehow appeared. This cell apparently mutated and produced other life cells, all of which further mutated into still larger and other varying forms of life. Eventually things randomly ended up as we are today. Some dispute arises whether or not there was a big bang at the very start, but essentially all life evolved over very long periods of time beginning with a single cell organism.

“Time” stands as a god in this theory… saving face when something is hard to explain. Just give it more “time”.

And that all-powerful first single cell organism… well that divine little powerhouse somehow held all of the DNA information for all living things that would follow… all animals, fish, birds, reptiles, people, you and me. Alongside all of that, somehow all vegetation came about, as well as inanimate things like rocks, earth, oxygen, elements, laws of nature, and so on.

On the opposite end of the spectrum there are those who believe that the earth is about 6000 years old and was created in it’s entirety by God through Jesus Christ. Included in this belief is that God created everything with purpose, including human beings created as His crowning achievement, made in His image both male and female. All humans (one race) came from the first man and woman, Adam and Eve.

God made the earth – land, water, creatures, dust, dirt, vegetation, sky, birds — everything, seen and unseen… the whole universe – from nothing (ex nihilo). He did all this for His glory, expanding and sharing it.

Interestingly, God’s purpose of creation included allowing evil to enter into it. His glory would be further revealed by His power shown over evil in destroying it. While doing so He would also reveal His love and grace and save some from destruction. Thus, for believers in God, this created realm called earth functions as a “passing through” into eternity, towards an eventual renewed heaven and earth where things like evil, sin, and death will be no more.

“For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.”

2 Peter 3:5-7

These two worldviews, evolution and creation, are two starkly contrasting belief systems.

First off, the origin of the theory of evolution is but a speck in its own existence, with written origins dating back to around 1748 at the earliest. A mere 275 years ago in the sea of millions and billions of years. You can’t even put that into a logical fraction. Hard to fathom that humans of this theory’s long past never clued in to their origins till as of late.

Creation writings on the other hand, called the Torah, date back to around 1225 BC, about 3248 years ago (12 times further back than the evolution theory), more than half way back into the history of the earth’s 6000 years. And if nay-sayers purport that the Torah (included in the Bible), is just that “ancient old book” that can’t hold truth for today… remember, even 3248 years ago in the evolution theory is pretty much like yesterday. Certainly credibility is boosted for these ancient writings in their historicity and preservation.

Foundational origins of writings must be considered when pondering our own origins.

Each of these belief systems also greatly differ in implication and consequence for humanity. (I write further on this HERE.) Everyone believes in something. Beliefs inform and form our worldview. From there we live out life. So it’s good to test our beliefs. (to test your own go HERE.)

But now, to the question at hand. What side of “millions of years” are you on?

Let’s look at a couple of time lines.

Here’s a sketch.

You either believe millions of years is on the front end or the back end of your life. What side of millions of years are you on?

With the evolution theory you are at the back end of millions of years, a speck in time and then gone:

Millions and millions of years of random chance > random YOU as an evolved life > death > apparent nothingness.

With creation you are at the front end of millions of years, created by God with purpose, to live and die with purpose, then to live forever with purpose:

God thinking of YOU > God created everything with us in mind > God created YOU with purpose > YOU live and die with purpose knowing God > YOU live with God forever in His glory (millions and millions of years of eternity)

“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Jesus, in John 11:25-26

And the drastic reality regarding evolution is that you will not simply die into nothingness. It’s a sham. In dying you will meet the Creator God who created you, whom you chose to deny and ignore all you life. Because of your rebellion and disbelief, He will cast you into hell…”where worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.” Mark 9:48

Again, what side of “millions and millions” of years do you believe to be on?

Your decision has implication for all of life – both now and eternally.

Believing one way or the other has huge implication. We all live and die in sync with what we believe.

You could even ask the question, Who is your God?

>>> Time? A single first cell? Myself?

>>> Or Creator God?

Much of the world buries itself in the theory of evolution so it does not have to reckon with and obey the Creator God who made us, and come to faith in His Son and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

But you… What will you do?

  1. Very nicely written Mark! A really fresh and insightful way to look at the theory of evolution as a belief system which it totally is.
